Can the 2012 Olympics be the bait to get more people into construction?

The 2012 Olympic Games in London has already been a godsend at a time when the UK construction industry has suffered, and now it should be the reason to encourage young people to take up a career in construction.

The Olympics has already given the jobs market a huge boost by creating over 10,000 construction jobs from working on Olympic projects like the Olympic Park and Olympic Stadium.

Sage Construction reports that the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) says the Olympics will not just provide a short-term boost for the industry, and can create a long-term legacy for construction.

REC’s Director of Policy and Professional Services Tom Hadley says that the Olympics could persuade individuals to train up and make a long-term career out of it and, “those outside of the jobs market to get the right training – and subsequently to get the right experience – that will put them in good stead, even when the project finishes”.

The Olympics has been a great thing for the construction industry and the work is expected to continue after the 2012 Games. Last week, the Olympic Delivery Authority announced a £100 million contract for post-Olympic work, which will create more jobs in London.
