Shapps to boost self-builders with promises of land
Grant Shapps has made it his mission to improve the fortunes of self-builders across the UK by making more public land available.
The Housing Minister has announced his plan to solve the lack of self-build homes in the UK by making publicly-owned land available exclusively for people that want to build their own homes.
The number of self-build homes in Britain is much lower than the rest of Europe and Mr Shapps wants it to go mainstream to help the UK’s housing market recover from the recession.
Mr Shapps, speaking at the Grand Designs Live 2011 event, says:
“Self builders deliver affordable, greener and more innovatively-designed homes, and make a big contribution to the number of new homes built in this country, yet there is scope to significantly increase the number of self built homes in the UK.”
“I want to turn around the fortunes of self-builders by cutting the red tape and bureaucracy they often face and make self build a reality for many more people.”
As well as giving the housing market a much-needed boost, this move by Grant Shapps follows the Prime Minister’s announcement last week that he wanted “to get Britain building again.” David Cameron was speaking after the news that GDP figures for construction in 2011 saw a 4.7% drop in productivity in 2011.
