Construction giants team up to build new Northern homes

Britain’s biggest house builder has joined forces with one of Britain’s biggest developers to potentially build thousands of homes across the North of England.

House builder Barratt has signed a deal with developer Peel Group to build over 1,000 homes across the North on sites in Liverpool, Wigan, Manchester and South Yorkshire. The whole project could be worth an estimated £200 million over the next five years.

Construction Enquirer report that Baratt are set to apply for planning permission and will start by building around 500 homes in Wigan and South Liverpool. Then additional homes will be built on sites in Greater Manchester, South Yorkshire and Cheshire.

This project and the partnership between Baratt and Peel will likely create new jobs for contractors across the North, with construction jobs to be created in cities like Manchester and Liverpool.

Baratt’s decision to deal with joint ventures is also a sensible one. Due to the fragile state of the economy, if a contractor takes on too much and cannot deliver, there is a chance there could be another Rok on the horizon. By partnering up with another company, there is less risk involved, as shown in Barratt’s partnership with London & Quadrant to built new homes around the Emirates stadium in London, home of the football side Arsenal, which we featured on Train4TradeSkills News last month.
