Morgan Sindall has begun work on a £3.3 million extension project at The Perse Upper School in Cambridge that will boost the building industry.
The new build development comprises the construction of a three-storey block with a number of associated external works that are due to complete in the summer of 2014.
The new building will significantly expand the school and provide new teaching and classroom facilities for staff and pupils.
Morgan Sindall will construct the building using a traditional concrete frame and a combination of pre-aged zinc cladding, glass curtain walling and render.
The building will be joined to an existing part of the school by an interconnecting covered foot-bridge built to the first floor.
As the project team is working on a busy school site, hoardings have been put into place to ensure that the building works are segregated and that there is minimal disruption to the children’s learning environment.
Ed Elliott, head teacher of The Perse Upper School, said: “We are all delighted to see construction underway. The building will house new classrooms and a large flexible area that can be used for assemblies, rehearsals, exams and meeting space.”

Work on site has begun and will complete following a 60-week programme of development.
The development at The Perse Upper School is the third major project Morgan Sindall has secured in the local area in recent years. The company completed the £9 million redevelopment of office space at Botanic House on Hills Road last year and is currently on site delivering a £1.7 million commercial development at 90 Hills Road.
BAM Construction has been named preferred bidder for a £10 million contract that will see the building of two new primary schools in Sheffield.
The UK-wide contractor will build the schools in Shirecliffe and Fir Vale for Sheffield City Council, paving the way for new jobs in the construction industry and boosting the trades.
BAM is now working on designs to meet the requirements of the council ahead of a start on site in September 2013. Completion is scheduled for August 2014 so the schools can open at the start of the 2014/15 academic year.
Construction director Kelvin Pollard said: “We look forward to using our experience and skills to create two schools Sheffield can be proud of.
“These are important facilities for the city and we are delighted BAM has been chosen to deliver them.
“It is a great sign that BAM continues to be selected as a company trusted to deliver quality buildings at affordable prices through regional frameworks such as YORbuild.”
Councillor Jackie Drayton, Sheffield City Council’s cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “Giving children the best possible start in their education is essential in helping them reach their full potential.
“Research has shown that children’s achievement at school can be improved by their surroundings. These new schools will provide desperately needed places and put well-designed facilities at the heart of the community. It’s great to hear that work will be starting soon.”
BAM has built a series of major education and health projects in Sheffield in the past ten years such as the Arts Tower and culminating in the laboratory rationalisation project for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. On the border with Rotherham, BAM is delivering the new Advanced Blade Casting Facility for Rolls-Royce.
The European Investment Bank has approved up to £100 million of financing which will kick-start building and construction work in the summer of 2013.
Julia Kennedy, associate director at Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) who has been supporting the college through the procurement process, said: “Construction is planned to start later this year and will act as an enormous boost to local small and medium enterprises working within the building sector and related supply chains thanks to the preferred bidder’s commitment to supporting local employment and training.”

Both campuses have been designed by Reiach and Hall and Michael Laird Architects. The College represents the single largest estates investment in the educational sector in Scotland and will help transform the city centre landscape for generations to come.
The University of Bath has awarded a £16m contract to VINCI Construction UK for the design and construction of a new, five-storey teaching building.
The General Teaching Accommodation (GTA) will include a range of high quality learning facilities, including group lecture rooms, two 350-space lectures theatres, and social spaces.
Glass walls spanning three storeys will provide high levels of natural light into a five-storey high circulation space. A ‘skywalk’ bridge will also connect the building with the main campus parade.
Once completed, the 8,000m2 building will double the number of large scale lecture theatres on campus, allowing up to 2,000 students to use the building at any one time.
The contract is part of the University Masterplan which provides a framework for the development of the campus until 2026.
Martyn Whalley, University of Bath’s Director of Estates, said: “The Masterplan sets out how we plan to provide state of the art facilities and with the new GTA we will have a wonderful resource to match the high quality of our teaching and learning.”

Completion is due in September 2013 with an opening date set for the following October. The project aims to further enhance the reputation of the university, which already boasts a top ten ranking in The Guardian’s 2013 university guide.
Plans for a £26 million student centre at the University of Essex were given planning permission today, paving the way for building construction work.
The project, which is part of the University’s £200 million-plus capital investment programme, will improve facilities and create new jobs in the building engineering industry.
The University of Essex is now going to look for a contractor to complete the project by the end of 2014.
The state-of-the-art centre will provide a ‘one stop shop’ for a range of student services, putting accommodation, finance, registry and student support functions under one roof to enhance the student experience.
The centre will also be home to an integrated learning centre, new IT facilities, a state-of-the-art media centre and will offer a 24-hour reading room.
Richard Halsall, Deputy Director of the Capital Development Team, said: “We are looking forward to getting work underway on this project as it will improve facilities for our students and staff, and bring student services together more cohesively.”
As part of the multi-million expansion of the co-educational school in Kent, BAM will deliver five new buildings and refurbish several more, bringing extra employment opportunities for people in the building construction sector.
Project director Rod Stiles said that BAM was particularly pleased to help the ‘historic’ school upgrade its facilities and provide work for local construction companies and trade professionals.
He said: “Most of the suppliers and construction workforce will be from Kent and our training programmes will continue to develop new local construction apprentices.”
The school, which became an “Academy with Military Traditions” in September 2010, will increase its capacity from 468 to 722 pupils and provide enhanced study and sport facilities.
BAM’s major project will include demolishing several blocks and building a sports hall, two two-storey teaching blocks and four two-storey junior boarding houses.
The construction firm confirmed today that further remodelling and repair work will take place across the school estate. The project builds on a thriving workload for BAM which in the last decade delivered buildings in Kent worth more than a third of a billion pounds.
Executive Principal, Chris Russell, said: “We are delighted that BAM has been selected to enhance our already extensive school site and facilities. This programme will ensure that the Duke of York’s Royal Military School will remain a leading state boarding academy for many years to come”.
Building work to develop two student accommodation schemes in London and Cambridge is to go ahead this year, providing a total of 770 bed spaces and boosting the building industry, Construction Enquirer reported today.
Student accommodation specialist Downing has confirmed it will build an 80,000 sq. ft. building which will feature 184 student apartments in Acton, West London. Building construction work is scheduled to start this month and it will continue till September 2013, when the £25 million 7-storey towers are completed.
The building firm confirmed it will build more student accommodation in Cambridge that will provide 586 student beds across three new buildings. Downing will also build a mixture of studio flats across the 182,279 sq. ft. development.
Downing Development Director, Paul Houghton, welcomed the new announcements and said that both buildings will be built sustainably which will improve energy efficiency.
Mr Houghton commented: “These acquisitions mark a significant milestone in our strategy to bring the Downing brand of superior, sustainable and energy-efficient buildings to the UK’s major student centres.
“The new funding environment and growing demand for higher quality living spaces with more amenities and better locations means that student accommodation is playing an increasingly important role in how universities attract fee-paying students.”

The building construction industry is to receive a £175 million investment as the University of Birmingham is going ahead with a £175 million expansion programme.
The expansion, which is funded by the university and alumni donations, will include the building of an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a new library, improving the university’s current sports facilities and student accommodation. The redevelopment plan was submitted to Birmingham City Council which is expected to give the green light for the five-year investment programme; likely to create new jobs in the building construction sector.
The Birmingham Mail reported today that plans for the sports centre will include Birmingham’s only 50- metre swimming pool, a sports hall that will host national sporting events and a gym where students can take part in a variety of sporting activities. The renovation will also include building dance studios and a high performance research centre as well as a new library with a cultural hub which will be open to the public.
It is hoped that the redevelopment scheme and the planned sports centre will cement the university’s reputation as one of the leading sporting universities in the UK.
Director of Estates, Ian Barker, told the Construction Enquirer that the project will benefit not only students and staff, but also local people who will be able to use the new facilities, helping the local economy and boosting economic growth.
Mr Baker said: “Although we are very proud of the current Edgbaston campus these are significant and exciting projects that will benefit students, staff and the local area. The University was founded to be an asset for the city and these plans have that aim in mind.
“For that reason, a number of developments, like the proposed new sports centre, swimming pool and the cultural hub, focus on facilities that will benefit the community as well as staff and students.
“We also hope that extending student accommodation and staff car parking on campus will relieve pressure on Selly Oak. Our plans also envisage a reduction in the University’s environmental impact and carbon footprint.”

Universities across the UK are planning to spend millions of pounds on new buildings and improve facilities as they are competing to attract more foreign and domestic students – research by the building firm Wates has shown.
Two thirds from all UK universities are going to spend more than £5 million on new construction work. This means that the Higher Education sector will continue to be a major source of work for contractors and trade qualified professionals.
Wates said the research represents different type of Universities. The BBC reported that there are more than 160 higher education institutions across the UK. The research shows that 79% of these have building plans to expand and make significant improvements.
According to the research, a third of universities are considering extensive building plans, some of those include creating new partnerships to modernise science facilities and even build a multi-purpose hotel on campus.
Ian Vickers from Wates told the Construction Enquirer: “Students are being asked to pay more than ever before for a university degree. That means they expect a quality of experience that reflects the high price they are paying.
“In order to remain competitive, universities are therefore looking to deliver modern facilities that have the ‘wow’ factor whilst also encouraging more efficient and collaborative use of space.” added Vickers.
